Oklahoma, not really synonymous with ‘great cannabis’. Oklahoma, it’s not exactly your first thought for a ‘vacation destination’. Oklahoma, not high on the list of ‘must attend music festivals’. But one family of the Eufaula Hills Farm in the city of Eufaula, Pittsburgh County, Oklahoma, thinks it’s time for all of that to change.
Meet the Yang family. The 6 sibling Yang family owns and operates Eufaula Hills, a self-sustained, sun grown, legal cannabis farm that overlooks Eufaula Lakes.
Descended from a Hmong tribe that was well known for their vast knowledge and extensive uses of hemp…the Yang family has generations of agricultural skills rooting back to successful cultivation in mountainous regions of Laos and Thailand. It’s here at Eufaula Hills that you’ll find living proof of their generations of knowledge, work ethic and love for nature on a daily basis.
On the farm you’ll even find the parents sharing duties. The struggle to keep business afloat is so serious lately that even though the family patriarch is battling lymphoma cancer and lung cancer…with five stints in his heart, chemotherapy sessions and recently losing just over 50 lbs, – Frank Yang continues to put his heart and soul into the family business.
According to a company rep, a large music festival is in the works. Yes, the kind where you can camp out and stay for a few days. The unfinished website mentions the options to bring your own tents or to rent cabins on-site. When I get the chance, I’ll update this article with photos of the outside and inside of their facilities.
No cannabis will be sold during said festival, but consumption on the property will be allowed. What kind of cannabis might you ask? We’re unsure of the brands sponsoring the event so far, but we’re surely excited to find and try some of Eufaula Hill’s award winning ‘Unleaded Supreme’.
You might be wondering why a cannabis farm would be willing to let complete strangers tour and party near their crops, why they’d make way for lights, a stage full of bands and thousands of people. Well what it comes down to is that the market in Oklahoma is oversaturated. With the State of Oklahoma showing over 8,000 growers, and more than 2,200 dispensary licenses…it’s not difficult to see why family farms and other grows are having a hard time making ends meet. In some cases, forcing families to explore other avenues with the properties they’ve spent their entire life savings on.
In other cases, small businesses have taken out loans that they can’t pay back because they’re practically giving away their crops. No matter the quality or quantity, it’s not enough.
What does this mean specifically for the Yang Family? Let me introduce you to a couple of those exploratory avenues…Camp Ganja which is a cannabis campground and retreat – and then there’s Ganja Mecca, an NFT funded and ticketed music festival held at the campsite.
Camp Ganja aims to be a cannabis camper’s dream. Put up your own tent, walk down to the lake, sit around a campfire and listen to your friend pretend like he can play the guitar. Smoke, BBQ, chow down, then return to your tent…and crash out. Then the next morning, wake up to the sweet, sweet stank of a fresh crop only yards from your temporary quarters. That’s gotta sound refreshing for those of y’all that are a little bit hippy or even a weekend outdoorsman.
If you’re like me though, you might be a little too suburban for the entire granola nag champa experience. Or maybe you’re back simply isn’t trained for a sleeping bag on the ground. Perhaps you just want that extra privacy. Well, Camp Ganja will soon have you covered too. They have plans to outfit single cabin units for rent. Not a lot of details are available regarding what the finished cabins will include or what they will look like. When we get our photographer out to the farm, we’ll be sure to update y’all with a video and photos of their progress.
A little about Ganja Mecca, the music festival to be held mere steps from Lake Eufaula.
The Ganja Mecca is a festival event aimed at being hosted once a year, put on by CGSC out of New York. The group from New York has successfully hosted many festivals around the nation, with major headliners and return to annual festivals. Plans to host 80,000 people on 135 acre cannabis farm and retreat, the mecca will be an art/food/music/NFT festival…one of the first of it’s kind. Definitely the first of it’s kind in it’s geographical area.
